New York Attorney General wants to force your Internet provider to spy on you

Posted on 20 October 2008 by admin

Dont you just love politicians who have no clue about technology yet try to leverage it to advance their political career? In an attempt to overshadow Senator Ted “Series of Tubes” Stevens, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has been trying to force your ISP to spy on your Internet activity in a misguided attempt to stop child pornography. Obviously stopping child pornography is an admirable goal, but forcing ISPs to become some sort of Internet police is absurd.
Though not officially endorsing the product, Cuomorecommended” a service by a company called Brilliant Digital that offers a deep packet inspection application that can scan every document, movie, image or file that you send or download, and see if it contains any illegal content. Ironically, Brilliant Digital has a sketchy past involving adware on Kazaa.
So 4th amendment, who needs it. Another example of how politicians try to eat at our civil liberties by slapping a noble cause on the front cover. Can anyone say Patriot Act?
